New Maxpedition Rollypoly Extreme Backpack

Excellent fold-up bag.By AWBoaterI wanted a fold-up bag to take with us when we go on a cruise. There are not a lot of fold-ups out there, and most of them left a lot to be desired. This is probably an exception to most bags of this type. The bag does look a bit military, but after spending my time in the military, I have no desire to play G.I. Joe. However, the bag fulfills a purpose, which is why I purchased it.This bag is well made, which is unusual in the roll-up category, as most bags of this type are pretty cheap. But you pay a premium price for the quality - but that is normal in life. Hefty YKK zippers are used on this bag, as well as double-stitching throughout. And there are 7 different compartments in the bag.It folds up into a round package, about 4.5" Dia x 6" or so. In the folded state, you could attach it to a belt or backpack, but I have found that packing it flat in my luggage works better. It lays flat in the front compartment of my suitcase. There is no padding in a backpack of this type, but the good news is when packed flat, it takes up no more room than a t-shirt.Fully opened and laid out flat, its about 17" high x 14" or so. It reminds me more of a tote bag in style than a bona-fide backpack, as its only about 1" or so deep when laid out flat.What is unusual about this bag is it has room for a 70oz water bladder (a 100oz bladder won't fit). While it might be argued that having to pack a water bladder in your suitcase might defeat the idea of a roll-up, it can nevertheless work for this purpose. There are even elastic strips on the harness to hold the tube of the bladder.The main compartment has a divider to separate the bladder from the other items, and there is a drain hole at the bottom on each side of the divider. The main compartment will easily hold two beach towels and the bladder. There are also two separate compartments on the front of the bag that are large enough to hold sunscreen, sunglasses, a hard-cover book, and a few other items. Another unusual feature for a roll-up backpack is that it has a sternum strap, and even a whistle built-into the buckle.The top load flap is rather unusual. The top cover is only about 1/3rd of the bag's width, and the straps cover the rest of the opening. While this is not a waterproof enclosure, you won't likely be going to the beach when it's raining anyway. One word to the wise however, if you are taking this bag on a cruise, that in some countries it's illegal to wear camouflage pattern clothing. Unlike many of Maxpedition products, this item is not available in camouflage, but it is available in khaki and OD Green. However, to be safe, I always buy items I am taking abroad in black. They were great while they lasted so I chose to buy what I thought were the same shorts. However, these went back to the seller. My old pair has a belt (non-stretching) and a tie to keep them secure. This is key when surfing as you will find out if you forget to tie them before your first wipeout...The new shorts have an elastic belt which fails to secure the shorts for anything close to serious swimming, plus they were too big (and I got the same size). I can see them ending up around my knees after pushing off the wall or jumping in the pool, so I sent them back. A minor blister developed at the base of a finger after some hard quad riding yesterday. The most protection is definitely limited to the knuckles, though the rest of the glove is great for protection from flying rocks, tree branches, mild weather(10C) and the like. Only a slim velcro strap secures the glove at the wrist, but for the price, "slim" takes care of staying out of the way inexpensively. The white fabric is permeable, so dirt stays if it isn't washed out right away. After a couple of weeks of use, they do not show sign of wear. Delivery was good, and four stars for an otherwise great "hand-in-glove" fit! The other is a range bag or personal travel bag for my pistol.Maxpedition products are stain resistant Teflon treated ballistic nylon. Hence, they are more expensive than some competitors. They are "hard use gear". This bag has about 20 compartments. It will carry an HP laptop with a 14 inch diagonal screen. The main compartment has an adjustable divider with plenty of room. The divider has a hook and loop board (velcro) on one side for additional pouches.The long end pouch will hold two 16 ounce water bottles. The small pouches at the opposite end I use for a Blackberry and a cell phone. The side pouches unzip and completely fold down.This replaces a worn out Wenger Swiss Gear laptop briefcase. It has more functionality. Negatives: The fabric is stiff, since it's treated. It should loosen up with wear. It's also expensive, though you can shop around among the authorized sellers, including Ebay. Tough and tumble bag for any needBy Karson178I have been shipping around for a Bug out Bag to carry my supplies for emergency situations and I needed to find a bag that was both affordable but spacious and resilient. I shopped around for a long while and I happened upon the Vulture II bag. I did my homework and from what I gathered it was a a very tough, spacious, and comfortable bag. It was, however, a little on the expensive end ($132 when I purchased it) so I was rather resistant to shelling out that much for a bag but over the course of a couple weeks it became clear that this is exactly the bag that I want.The bag has met and exceeded all my expectations. From pulling it out of its plastic covering you can tell immediately that this was one rugged bag, it felt indestructible. Opening it up it revealed PLENTY of space for whatever you could want. There is a pocket for a water bladder if that is what one wants but as another reviewer stated it fits a laptop perfectly if you are thinking of using the bag more domestically. The zippers are a bit stiff on the bag requiring a little work to close and open them but that is of no surprise considering how tough the bag is and that new bags naturally need to be broken in a little. The shoulder straps, with CORRECT fitting, are extremely comfortable and there are both chest and abdomen straps that really help offload some of the pull on the shoulders. The Lunada has been comfortable and durable but is a little too small now that my wife has been adding things to what had been a perfect minimalist day pack. Given the need for a bigger size, the Malaga fit the bill perfectly.It has lots of compartments perfect for keeping things organized and easy to access. The quality of materials and zippers are top notch. The workmanship is a tiny bit less perfect than my Lunada (from my perfectionist perspective). I'm also thinking that the Malaga will be the perfect size once I add a netbook to my traveling bag.The only complaint that I can find is that the bag is not very water resistant with the many easy to use zippers. My solution has been to carry a water resistant stuff sack in case of rain (haven't had to use it yet though).In the end, this is another typical Maxpedition product which leaves little room for improvement. When taking off the gloves, the Velcro flap, located on the back of the wrist, tends to flip back closed forcing the use of mouth or a third hand. Manufacturer needs to reverse the flaps so that gravity is a help instead of a hindrance. Like Mechanix Mechanix Wear MG-05-009 Original Glove, Black, Medium gloves. Also there is one of those 100% plastic wanna-be cloth crap labels, sown inside the glove at the inner right wrist area. The label is rather large, approximately 1"x 3". (The label tends to scratch the sensitive inner wrist area and cause itching & insanity, though I was magically transported to the days when scratchy 100% plastic labels in t-shirts were starting to entertain us all). You cannot tear off the label without damaging the thin glove wristband. Cutting the label would increase the irritation/insanity factor by 3.17. Manufacturer needs to make labels inside gloves easy to detach. Like Mechanix gloves. The rough palm pad is one piece, very hard, and non-pliable. Almost shell-like. I was surprised to see that it was leather. The shell-like pad makes it very difficult to grab something securely. I tried to work the glove to soften the palm pad and all that caused was my palms becoming sore. I had to cut and remove the leather palm pad along the stitches in order to make the gloves function somewhat. Which ruined any use of these as pat-down gloves. Manufactor is probably on the horns of a dilemma, since splitting the leather palm pad into 2-3 separate pieces would cause the edges of the several palm pad pieces to snag on clothing and negate the only outstanding attribute of the gloves. Which are Pat-downs. I can see how these gloves would be great as frisk/pat-down gloves. The hard palm pad slides right over fabric. It also slides off flashlights, keys or gun butts. Wearing these gloves, while grabbing an item off your equipment belt, would be placing your life in your own hands. Is that a pun?These gloves would be great if you are a low-paid, harried TSA employee at one of those cushy 8hr stationary posts, where the frisking of pissed-off, obese, slightly moist American travelers is a joyous requirement and your bureaucratic, CHOA supervisor is plotting to become a GS-4 via your back. Anything else, fugetaboutit. Remember to order 1 size, if not 2 sizes larger. Fills a Niche!By JusticeKNGreat bag! If you know Maxpedition products, this is more of the same. SOLID. Functional. Well considered. Pricey, but you truly do get what you pay for. The first review posted went into quite a bit of detail, so I won't re-iterate (except to agree a grab handle would have been nice). I would add two thoughts: 1) I've longed for a more carry-able version of the Jumbo/Fatboy to carry to and from a work setting. This bag fills that niche. It LOOKS like a messenger bag and is big enough to carry a legal pad or three-ring binder. Even with this main compartment filled, the bag still has a ton of EDC potential. 2) If you focus on JUST the long top pocket on the bag. There is an elastic strap across one side of that compartment-- I use the slots in the elastic to hold down a small flashlight, knife, multi-tool, lighter, whistle. On the other side of the compartment is a zippered mesh pocket -- perfect for Handi-wipes and a small first-aid kit. This, of course, leaves space for free floating gear in between the elastic straps and the mesh pocket. This is just one pocket -- and there are TONS more -- but it illustrates the type of organizational design that makes Maxpedition bags so super-functional.
